O. Overview of Musical
Journey (Pre-College years)
1.) Started piano lessons at age 7
a. took lessons 4 years and then switched to drums
2.) Started drumset lessons in 4th grade and by 7th grade
started playing the xylophone and receiving mallet lessons
3.) By 7th grade very into jazz-Dave Brubeck's
group-especially loved Paul Desmond's alto sound
a. Started my own jazz quartet in 7th grade-"Harmonic
Series Jazz Quartet (alto sax, piano, bass and drums)
b. this group continued into our senior year in High
School-renamed "Free Mode Jazz Quartet" and later,
Quintet, with the addition of a trumpet
1. Played music of:
a. Cannonball Adderley: Walk Tall, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy
b. John Coltrane: Mr. P.C.
c. Brubeck: Take Five, Blue Rondo ala Turk
d. Gary Burton: Hand Bags and Glad Rags & Sunset Bell
4.) Heavily into mallets in middle school and started
playing the vibes by 9th grade-getting into improvisation
and jazz theory
a. I was attending music camps by this time:
1. Madison
2. Moorhead State in Kentucky
3. Berklee College of Music before I began my Senior year
of High School-an entire summer program
5.) By 9th grade, started composing and later arranging
music
6.) Participated in Wisconsin State Honors Orchestra in
High School
7.) Received scholarships to attend Eastman (chose) and
Indiana
P. Overview of College
(Eastman School of Music years)
1.) Percussion Major-first percussionist chosen in the
U.S.: 1972; studied with John Beck
2.) Studied Jazz Improvisation with:
a. Bill Dobbins; piano
b. Phil Markowitz; piano
c. Ray Ricker; saxophone
3.) Studied Jazz Arranging with Ray Wright
4.) Started Auracle, progressive jazz ensemble then Inner
Vision, Sophomore year with Ron Wagner, fellow
percussionist
a. I played vibes, percussion and composed
5.) Auracle (Inner Vision) won the New York State "Battle
of the Bands" contest my Junior year
a. As our prize, we recorded an album of original music at
Columbia Records in NYC
6.) Auracle (Inner Vision) won the Notre Dame Jazz
Festival for the "Best Jazz Combo" my Junior year
7.) Auracle recorded our second album of original music
our Senior year
8.) I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1976
9.) Auracle decides to move to Los Angeles via a brief
stint in Nashville
